Freedom from True and False Guilt

Many years ago, I attended a legalistic church that mainly focused on the outside of people. After salvation the main attention was on what you outwardly did or didn’t do. Sadly their attention was not on Jesus’ love, nor the power of the Holy Spirit that transforms hearts into Christ likeness. If you were able to outwardly go along with the program, and keep certain rules that leadership had set up as God’s will- you were considered spiritual. This type of spiritual pride is deceptive and ugly.  If you were not able to keep these outward rules- you were condemned, judged, looked down upon and considered not good enough, while guilty was stamped on your heart and mind. Satan mightily used religious guilt and condemnation to keep this fellowship from discovering the Lord’s will, acceptance, freedom, unconditional love, peace and discovering the abundant life Christ longs for us to experience. This type of legalistic religious guilt is toxic. In fact guilt whether true or false is toxic that is why Jesus wants us to learn how to put it on Him.

We have all fallen short of God’s glory and the beauty of His Spirit. That is one of the reasons God sent the Son of Man, Jesus Christ into the world. He took our place and paid His life’s blood for our true guilt on the cross. He defeated death, hell, and the grave, so that we may discover who we truly are in Him-His beloved children with fulfilling purpose and a destiny to complete. Jesus was born, lived, died, and rose from the grave, so that we can abide and walk in forgiveness, acceptance, and in the abundant life- not in tormenting condemnation and agitating guilt eating at our heart and mind. How can we experience this abundant life and freedom, if we feel not good enough and guilty over our true or false guilt?  We cannot!

Jesus settled it once and for all – He made the payment for our past, present, and future sin. We are forgiven of all true guilt- it is finished! That is the good news of the gospel! Does this mean we will not fall short again? No, but it means we are always forgiven and unconditionally loved in Christ Jesus, even when we fall short time and again. Does it mean because we walk in grace and are constantly forgiven that we can just do whatever? Of course not, God gives His children limits for our protection, and to keep us from falling into danger.  At the same time the Holy Spirit lives within our hearts, and helps us gradually grow and produce fruits of the Spirit, which is love, joy, peace, gentleness, goodness, meekness, self-control, and faith.

Over the years, I have spoken with many of God’s precious children that are weighed down in false guilt. Most of them had the experience of not being loved and accepted as a child, especially by their parents or authority figures. When children are not given love and acceptance, they internalize this loss as being their fault, which of course is a ludicrous lie. When their parents angrily punish them for a true or false offense, they believe the lie that they deserve to be hurt and punished. This mistaken belief taken into adulthood is used by Satan to hook into the wounded heart to create more torment through false guilt, sickness, self-hate, and many other demonic manifestations. Then the adult child believes the lie: if I could just do it right- if I could just be perfect things would work out- but I can’t- I am a loser-I hate myself- I deserve to be punished -guilt always believes in punishment.

On the other hand, there is Jesus Christ the Savior and lover of mankind! He is the One that offers us forgiveness, unconditional love, acceptance, guidance, compassion, understanding, wisdom, mercy, honor, humility, strength, courage, clarity, Truth, power, healing- giving grace and beauty of the Spirit. Through our ongoing relationship with Jesus Christ, we will be able to unravel the wounds that perpetuate false guilt, and accept forgiveness for true guilt.  He will help us to keep stepping forward in the Spirit- learning to love and forgive ourselves and others the way He loves us- discovering the ongoing power of His healing mercy and amazing grace.

If you are habitually walking in Satan’s cycle of guilt and fear of punishment- Jesus Christ invites you to come to Him- Put your guilt on Him- Put your wounded heart on Him-Partake of His forgiveness purchased for you on Calvary- Partake of His tender love-Partake of His powerful Holy Spirit- Partake of His acceptance of you. The loving Daddy Jesus loves you, and desires to free you from the cycle of condemnation and fear of punishment- He longs to transport your soul to the abiding place of forgiveness, safety, and freedom!

“God did not send his Son into the world to judge and condemn the world, but to be its Savior and rescue it! So now there is no longer any condemnation for those who believe in him, but the unbeliever already lives under condemnation because they do not believe in the name of God’s beloved Son. But those who love the Truth will come out into the Light and welcome its exposure, for the Light will reveal that their fruitful works were produced by God” (John 3:17,18,21tPt).
