Inspiration Teaching Words of Life

I Am a Servant

The scriptures declare in the old and new testament, “Say to the Daughter of Zion [inhabitants of Jerusalem]. Behold, your King is coming to you, lowly and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, that foal of a donkey [a beast of burden]. On Palm Sunday Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey, as the excited crowds worshipped the Son of David [the Messiah]. Prior to His entrance, Jesus performed mighty miracles for those He passed by who ask for His healing touch, pity and mercy.

At this time, Jesus also spoke personal words of wisdom and needed instruction to His disciples. As we recall, the disciples had recently been in several agitated discussions about which of them would be the greatest, and who would sit on Christ right hand and left hand in his coming Kingdom. Jesus knowing their jealous thoughts called them to his side and spoke to them. He stated, “Kings and those with great authority in this world rule oppressively over their subjects, like tyrants. But this is not your calling. You will lead by a completely different model. The greatest one among you will live as the one who is called to serve others, because the greatest honor and authority is reserved for the one with the heart of a servant. For even the Son of Man did not come expecting to be served by everyone, but to serve everyone, and to give his life in exchange for the salvation of many.”

Today, as we pause and think on the wisdom of our Lord’s words spoken to his disciples, may this confession pour out of our hearts, “I am a surrendered servant- I long to serve you out of a pure and humble heart- I am humbly listening for my name- I am waiting for your plan of servanthood to unfold and become far-reaching into every area of my life.”

“And Jesus called them to Him and said. You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men hold them in subjection [tyrannizing over them!]. Not so shall it be among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you must be your slave. Just as the Son of Man came not to be waited on but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many[the price paid to set them free]” Matthew 20:26-28.
