Inspiration Teaching Words of Life

Learning Contentment

“For I have learned how to be content [satisfied to the point where I am not disturbed or disquieted] in whatever state I am. I have learned in any and all circumstances the secret of facing every situation. I have strength for all things in Christ who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency]” (Philippians 4:11b, 12b, 13)

Because of Paul’s surrendered and devoted relationship with Jesus Christ, he was content through both easy and difficult circumstances. Yet we understand that this type of contentment doesn’t develop instantaneously – it must be learned and worked into our lives through God’s amazing grace. Paul received valuable wisdom, knowledge, and spiritual education in the same “school of life” that we all attend. It is through the ups and downs that we discover our true self, as a child of God. In fact, all types of learning-whether in the physical, spiritual, or emotional realms-involve failure and victory, but as we persevere through the course, we will eventually discover great success to keep stepping forward. The only way to not move forward is to turn away from the Lord- and even if we turn in the wrong direction the Love of God will draw us back to Him. We may take three steps forward- one step back-four steps forward-two steps back, but sooner or later our heart will successfully be transformed into Christ’s likeness. We will learn the secret of facing every situation with contentment because we understand that the Lord has our lives in His loving hands, and He offers us His mighty strength and sufficient grace no matter what we are feeling.   As we learn how to draw from Christ, by embracing the empowering strength of the Spirit, we will gradually find ourselves self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency. It is His desire to flood us with inner strength and make us ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses inner strength into us. At last, we will achieve contentment, satisfaction, peace, and ease of mind, no matter what the circumstance!
