Receiving God’s Help

persistant prayer

When we are struggling with unresolved issues and trouble in our lives, we may experience painful emotions that sometimes motivate us to cry out to God for help. At other times, these same painful emotions may motivate us to turn away from God and run toward destructive coping techniques – such as rationalization, denial, or addictions- which will temporarily numb our pain and keep us from facing reality, but in the long run they prolong our suffering, and create greater destructive problems.

Why do we sometimes run to God for help and at other times try to figure and fix things ourselves apart from God? Well let’s look at several matters that maybe influencing us.

We are individuals who live in a fast-paced world, and many of us have a “happy meal” mentality. Like at the fast-food, drive through restaurant; we place our request at the microphone, pull up to the window, and expect our meal which includes a prize-all within a few minutes’ time. Some of us pray like this when we ask for God’s help. When the answer to the problem doesn’t come in a short amount of time, we pull away from “God’s microphone”, as our faith flies out the window.

Sometimes we do not turn to God for help because we believe that intelligence and human wisdom are enough. We may feel our way of doing things is better than God’s way of doing things. Therefore, we try to figure out what to do without God’s leading, even though we struggle and repeatedly fall down.

Then there are those who believe they don’t deserve to be helped because they have made so many mistakes, and they fear that God will reject them because He is disappointed or mad with them and doesn’t want to help- not understanding God’s unconditional love, grace, forgiveness, power, and acceptance to see us through and promote us in this life.

Finally, many people who struggle and refuse to go to God for help have a great deal of anger toward Him. They believe that God is cold, mean spirited, ready to inflict angry punishment – He certainly could not be caring or loving, since so much that is bad happens in our world. The anger blinds many from seeing who God really is- God is Love.

All these reasons keep many from crying out and receiving God’s help, but these beliefs are not grounded in the truth. The truth will set us free when we are ready to accept it by faith. We don’t need to be perfect to be helped. We only need to want Jesus and humbly turn to Him. As we keep on asking, seeking, and knocking, Jesus will move us toward His light and in His perfect timing fulfill all His purposes and promises. Jesus Christ lives and longs to open the door so we can experience an abundant life while living on earth and then give us the hope of living eternal life with Him in Paradise.

“Keep on asking and it will be given you; keep on seeking and you will find; keep on knocking [reverently] and [the door] will be opened to you. For everyone who keeps on asking receives; and he who keeps on seeking finds; and to him who keeps on knocking, [the door] will be opened” (Matthew 7:7-8).
