The Spirit of Fear

In our world, the spirit of fear torments the human race. In many areas, our spirit, soul, and body are easily sucked into fear’s vortex of agony, control, and defeat. What are you afraid of? Maybe you are afraid that certain people may not be pleased with you, so you go into “people pleasing bondage”, only to discover the impossibility of pleasing everyone! Maybe your personality is on the other end, and when you feel afraid of being rejected or of not getting what you think you need from someone, you go into control mode and attempt to manipulate others with anger or guilt. When words and actions are motivated by fear and not love, it just creates more bondage. God does not give us the spirit of cowardly fear, but he gives the Holy Spirit who gives us mighty power, love, and a mind that has been delivered, protected, and made secure. God the Father sent Jesus the Son into the world to pay for mankind’s sin, establishing the way for the Holy Spirit to enter and live within the believers’ heart and mind. It is God’s will that the cycle of fear that controls many of our thoughts and actions is defeated by the power of His love. God’s love will give us the freedom to walk in liberty and love- not in bondage and fear.
When we run to Jesus, and open our hearts to receive God’s grace, He has many valuable gifts to help us overcome tormenting fear. We cannot overcome fear on our own, but because Christ has given all believers the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are not alone in the struggle; the Helper is living inside our hearts to give us aid! As we personally receive Christ’s unconditional love and grow in His unmerited grace, the reality of the words of Christ, “I will never, no never, no never’, reject, forsake, or leave you,” will overtake and push out fear. Knowing you are accepted and unconditionally loved by the creator of the Universe, even if it feels as if no one else unconditionally loves or accepts you, is the stabilizing factor of overcoming the spirit of fear. The spirit of fear is prevalent in our world, and is not from God. Fear is a thief that attempts to rob you of being able to walk in the gift of peace and joy. Experientially growing, stepping forward, and abiding in God’s unconditional love gives God’s children the power that pushes out the spirit of fear. Love is more powerful than evil and that includes fear! God has so much to give you; the gifts of power….love….and calm and well-balanced mind…..discipline….and self-control. This Holy power enables you to discover liberty and freedom- not the bondage of trying to please everyone in everything-not in trying to manipulate others to escape the tormenting fear of rejection- not even in struggling to keep rules and be perfect, but by resting in Jesus Christ’s acceptance of your precious soul. He longs for His children to rest in the truth of His overcoming love, and His powerful Spirit that is united and working within our spirit. In time, the power of God’s love will defeat all opposition that attempts to bring us back and entrap us into the bondage of fear.
“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity [of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear], but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control” (2Timothy1:7).
